I use English Wool Combs when the fleece staple length is greater than 6 inches long.   I use the English Wool Combs when I want to make a very fine lace weight yarn.

English Wool Combs have 5 rows of tines on each comb and the tines are exceedingly sharp. English Wool Combs can double as a lethal weapon.  One of the pair of combs is mounted to a table and the other is wielded by the craftsman.

I begin by loading washed fleece onto the mounted Comb.  I then comb the fleece, taking little bites with each pass.  With each swipe of the comb a little alpaca fleece transfers from the stationary comb to the one in my hand.  When most of the fleece is transferred, I swap combs and repeat the process until a beautiful fleece beard forms.

With gentle steady hand over hand pull I draw the fleece off the comb making a sliver.  If the humidity is right and I have a good long staple length I can pull a solid sliver over three feet long!
