One of the most frequent questions I am asked by people visiting my alpaca farm is “Do alpacas spit?”. I love this question and use it to encourage children and young adults to be respectful of alpacas when they approach them. I say, yes alpacas spit. If you annoy them they will spit at you. |

| Alpacas also spit at each other during dinner time when I don’t get the food out fast enough or two alpacas want to eat out of the same bowl. Most spits are just the latest food they have in their mouths and aren’t that bad. When alpacas get really annoyed, however, they hock food up from their stomach and spit that at you, and that smells really bad.
Alpaca spit is also a chemical weapon. If the spit comes from the digestive tract it incapacitates the facial muscles of the spitee. These poor alpacas walk around with drooping, drooling jaws for about 10 minutes. During this time the spitee cannot eat or drink. |
