Like most mammals the split between male alpaca and female alpacas is about 50/50. Not all males are created equal, however. Some alpaca super studs sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars. These are very fine exceptional animals and their owners invested a lot into them. Some males are perfectly fine alpacas but don't make the cut for a breeding program. We are happy to make our extra male alpacas available as pet alpacas or companion animal to another farm animal like a goat or horse. Alpacas can be trained to do a variety of tricks. Some will even carry a light backpack. My Taittinger will stand on his hind legs when I get out the watering hose. -- Return to Frequently Asked Questions
